Bullet Proof Yourself Against Identity Theft

The term identity theft, which is stealing and using someone else’s identity, was coined in 1964. It has also been called impersonation, identity fraud, and identity cloning. Identity theft has become more popular in the past few years because of the growing popularity of the Internet. It now easier to steal someone else’s identity and it is now harder to catch an identity theft. This makes it even more important to understand what identity theft is, and what we can do to protect ourselves.

Identity theft has been around long before the internet. At first it the identity theft usually found the necessary information by going through other people’s garbage. Then soon after phones were invented, phone scams came into existence. Now that there are computers, the Internet, and electronic gadgets, all being used to store personal information, identity theft has become the fastest growing crime.

Someone might want to steal someone else’s identity to obtain credit, goods, or services at the victim’s expense. This is one of the most common reasons for identity theft. Also, criminals hiding from authorities or someone wanting to hide from creditors may steal someone’s identity so they themselves can stay anonymous. Also, sometimes people use another identity to obtain medicine or medical services. This can result in errors in the victim’s medical record. Illegal immigrants might steal someone’s identity so they can live and work within the country.

Individuals who steal another person’s identity first need to get information on that person. They do so by looking in their trash for papers they may have thrown away that contains personal information. They may also steal their bank cards, passports, ID cards, checks, or other personal belongings, or they might look over someone’s shoulder as they punch in their passwords at the ATM or at a public computer. This is referred to as shoulder surfing. They also may be able to find information on the person’s computer, phone, flash drive, PDA, or other electronic devices. Sometimes they hack into the person’s computer. They might also post fake jobs online and require an application in which they ask for personal information. They might even find some information they can use from what the person has posted on social networking sites.

Luckily, it is possible to protect yourself against identity theft. Some of the ways to protect yourself include doing online shopping only at sites that you know and trust, bringing in your mail as soon as possible, and having anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed on your computer. Choose good passwords for all your online accounts such as e-mails, auction sites, online bank accounts, and online payment accounts. A good password should have lowercase letters, upper case letters, and numbers. Depending on the site, they may also allow dashes, underscores, and other special characters. Also, never give out personal information on the phone, chat rooms, or suspicious websites. Also be In addition, be careful not to post too much personal information on social networking sites. You also shouldn’t leave papers lying around that have personal information on them, such as checks, credit card statements, and bank receipts. If you want to dispose of such documents, don’t just throw them in the trash. Instead shred them in a paper shredder or burn them.

Even if you take precautions, you might still become a victim of identity theft. If you do, you can report it by calling your bank and credit card companies, and by filing a report with the police

People today are using computers for a wide array of different activities, and unfortunately this has lead to hackers and scam artists becoming increasingly intelligent with systems. Fortunately, there are a number of computer security programs and downloads that can protect your computer. Here are some terms you will want to familiarize yourself with.

The first term to know is firewall, which works to secure your computer. What it does is restrict information that comes to your computer from other computers, thus providing you with much more control over viruses, programs and worms that other people may send. If you have a high speed connection, have a firewall is an absolute must.

The next computer security term to familiarize yourself with is spyware, which is a rather broad category for malicious software that takes partial control over your computer’s operation without your consent. Spyware essentially monitors your activity on the internet and sends the information to someone else. It can record everything from your keystrokes, history, passwords and other confidential information. Installing anti-spyware is extremely important.

The final term to associate yourself with is virus and anti-virus programs. A virus is a program or code that is loaded onto your computer and can bring your system to a halt. There are simple viruses that can be fixed and more dangerous viruses that will actually bypass security systems. Viruses are typically hidden in programs and activated when you run the program, so be careful what you download. Anti-virus programs can help warn you if a file or program is unsafe. It does this by scanning all incoming and outgoing files for known viruses.

Why is identity theft not at the head of all discussions if it is as serious as all the reports suggest?

Did you hear that identity fraud can cause the next Financial Collapse in the United States!

Why are our governments not investing more time, effort and harsher prison sentences for those who choose to participate in this cowardly act?

Who are these people? How can you safeguard yourself, your significant other and your children from being an identity theft victim?

What identity theft prevention measure’s can you take to make sure that you and your families’ information is secured?

The reason for this article is to answer these questions and make you fully aware of habits that you have probably developed that you will need to change to lower your chances of being a victim.

I was truly astonished when I started to research identity theft reports. Did you know?

11.1 million Adults were victims of identity theft in 2009.
The total fraud amount was $54 Billion.
Identity theft fraud victims increased by 12% in 2009 and it is growing out of control today.
13% of identity fraud crimes were committed by someone the victim knew.
18 to 24 year olds are a huge target for this type of crime and they are also the slowest to detect that they have become a victim.

These numbers are staggering and yet the FBI still doesn’t have a clear direction on how to stop or even slow this epidemic down.

Identity theft thieves will steal your identity by rummaging through your trash, so make sure you invest in a Shredder so that you can shred all unwanted mail or documents.

Also use your credit and debit cards at retail outlets that you are comfortable with because thieves will use storage devices when processing your card to steal your credit or debit card number.

Use an updated anti-virus on your computers and change your user name and password regularly.

Retrieve your mail every day; don’t leave mail in your mail box. Once thieves get your mail they can divert your bank statements to another address.

Beware of companies that may call and request your personal information. Sometimes you might even get an email from a company that claims to be your bank stating that they need to update your information. DO Not Fall Prey To This.

Be careful of where you leave your personal information and belonging at work, things like purses, wallets, handbags or brief case. Remember identity theft thieves are everywhere; sometimes they are your closest friend, significant other, work associate or even your family members.

If we all get identity theft protection, this terrible crime will start to become more controllable. So many of you do not believe you will ever be a victim and that is the reason why identity theft has grown to such a huge epidemic.

You don’t have to believe me just pick up the papers, search the internet and there are horror stories everywhere from credit identity theft, medical Insurance id theft, drivers license and the list goes on.

Would you want to be rushed to the hospital for a blood transfusion and because your identity was used by someone else you get the wrong blood type. This how serious this is Folks. Get Protected.

It is great to monitor your credit but you also need protection that will help you restore your credit and the credit of your loved ones if there is a problem and save you loss of time from work and money trying to correct the problem yourself.
